I’m going to start out here and admit that I’m at chapter 40 and don’t have the bloodiest clue what is going on. This is not the fault of the author. The book is well written, the world well put together, and the story is well told. The problem, well, … its one of tastes and also of an over powering strength of the audiobook.
Holy crap does this voice actor, who happens to also be the author, tell a good story. His voice is just soothing and perfect and a sorta Irish patter that just lures you in. I couldn’t even tell you if some of the words I didn’t understand were accent or conlang or slang. It didn’t matter. it was just perfect. and soothing.
And I fell asleep.
Multiple times.
It was a good sleep, I don’t regret it. However, the story is a bit on the Grimdark side and I’m just not in a Grimdark place. So I’ve given up on rewinding because I kinda can’t really take the goblins killing and eating a prisoner while his comrades watch on and sing through it for comfort.
So. If you’re in a place where you can handle the Grimdark, I believe this would be an amazing find for you. If not but you need something to fall asleep to, Christopher Buehlman’s voice will be an amazing find for you. I’m not joking.
Well, I am a little, but also with sincerity.
